“Smoking is bad for you, you know,” she spoke. I hummed and took another drag of my cigarette, smirking as I exhaled. “You’re the new girl.”
“Is it that obvious?” The sarcasm in my question was not lost on her.
She chuckled. “Everyone knows everyone here. It’s a small town.”
“No lie there,” I said as I exhaled. “Why are you here?”
She stood silent for a moment. I could only assume she was contemplating her answer as she watched me closely. “I figured you could use a friend.”
“Oh?” I asked, stubbing out the cherry and dropping the half smoked cigarette to the ground. “And how did you figure that? I've only been here two hours.”
“Everyone needs a friend,” she replied with ease as though it was the most logical answer in the world.
“I’m not everyone.”
“I don’t doubt that,” she half whispered. Her eyes cut to the football field and then back to me. “What’s your next class?”
“Free period. Seems I have two of them this year.”
“Lucky for you, I have the same. Come on.” She turned around and motioned with her hand to follow. “I’ll show you where I like to hang out.” I picked up my bag, stuffed my pack in my pocket and slowly followed behind her. I wouldn't admit it, but it was nice to have someone to talk to.
